Neighbors in the news: Hoffman Estates High names new head basketball coach
• Peter McBride was named head boys basketball coach at Hoffman Estates High School.
McBride, who has been the school's head sophomore boys basketball coach, takes over the program from Luke Yanule, who is stepping down after 10 years as the Hawks' head coach.
McBride has been the Hawks' sophomore boys basketball coach since 2020. He previously served as the sophomore boys basketball coach at Schaumburg High School from 2018-2020, with an overall record of 27-25, while also serving as an assistant varsity coach at the school.
Prior to joining Township High School District 211, McBride was an assistant varsity boys basketball coach for St. Charles East High School; served as a graduate assistant men's basketball coach at North Park University; and coached freshman boys basketball, then served as an assistant varsity boys basketball coach at Maine East High School.
McBride holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education, with middle school endorsements and minors in mathematics and Spanish, and a master's degree in education, both from North Park University.

Congratulations to Victor Castillo, who was recently sworn in as an officer with the Prospect Heights Police Department. Mayor Nicholas Helmer officiated the swearing in ceremony May 24.
Officer Castillo joins the Prospect Heights Police Department after graduating from West Leyden High School, Northlake, and the College of DuPage.
Prior to accepting the position as a police officer with the Prospect Heights Police Department, Castillo worked at Fermilab as a security officer.

Julia Zera of Arlington Heights has received a full scholarship to attend Michigan State University this fall.
The Rolling Meadows High School graduate plans to major in mathematics.
During her time at Rolling Meadows High School, Zera was a member of the Math Team, Chess Team and Scholastic Bowl. She is a National Merit commended scholar, a member of National Honor Society, a national AP Scholar, and received the National Italian Exam Gold Award and Senior Medallions in mathematics, Italian and English-writing.
She was selected from more than 1,300 of the top high school seniors who applied to Michigan State University, participated in interviews and took an intensive general knowledge exam this past winter.
In all, 17 incoming Michigan State University students have been awarded an Alumni Distinguished Scholarship or University Distinguished Scholarship, which will cover full tuition, room and board and a stipend for up to eight semesters of study.

Prakash D. Nigam, son of Subhash and Tammy Nigam of Palatine, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on Saturday, May 22, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Infantry branch.
While at West Point, the cadet concentrated his studies in chemical engineering.
A 2017 Palatine High School graduate, Nigam will report to Fort Benning, Georgia, for his first assignment.
• William Wallace of Island Lake was one of 17 Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, students honored by the Iowa Broadcast News Association at its annual conference.
Wallace earned third place in Public Affairs for Student TV for "Sowing the Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story."
The contest recognizes outstanding radio and TV entries from across Iowa that were broadcast in 2020. The awards were presented during the association's annual conference.
