Montini teacher Barry Briggs celebrating his retirement after 18 years at the Lombard school

Earlier this spring, Montini Catholic Principal Christopher Tiritilli announced the retirement of Barry Briggs, a math and technology teacher and head varsity soccer coach.

Briggs was honored by his colleagues and students during Montini Catholic's Founder's Day ceremony on May 17.

“Mr. Barry Briggs is finishing his 18th year at Montini and his 19th year in education,” said President Kevin Beirne. “During his tenure, he has taught 11 different math courses, including Advanced Placement statistics, and many honors courses. He has also taught seven technology courses, including Advanced Placement computer science.”

In addition, Briggs taught in his third academic department, helping out with a strength and power class in Montini's PE/Health Department. “Rumor has it that he out-lifted all students in the class at the time,” joked Beirne.

Like a true Lasallian educator, Briggs impacted young people outside the classroom as much as he did inside the classroom. For many years, he contributed to Montini's incredibly successful math team as assistant varsity coach.

As varsity soccer coach (boys and girls), he also could be seen on the sidelines, displaying a passion not just for the sport, but for coaching it.

“Mr. Briggs never shied away from getting on the pitch with his players showing them how it was done, rather than just telling them,” Beirne said. “That same competitive spirit has been on display this last year as Mr. Briggs was the heart and soul of the faculty intramural team.”

“For those of us who’ve had the privilege of working with Mr. Briggs during his time here, we’ve come to know someone who was always willing to pitch in, was always upbeat and positive, and could tell a great story. We wish Mr. Briggs, an awesome retirement!”
