MCC names winners of high school WYSE 2016 competition
Marian Central High School, Prairie Ridge High School, Barrington High School and Luther North College Prep were the top winners in four divisions in the 2016 McHenry County Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition, hosted recently by McHenry County College.
In Division 300, Luther North College Prep was the only competitor. In Division 700 (enrollment under 700), Marian Central took first place and Johnsburg took second. In Division 1500 (with 701 to 1,500 students), Prairie Ridge finished first, Richmond-Burton finished second and Woodstock North finished third. In Division Unlimited (enrollment greater than 1,500 students), Barrington finished first, Crystal Lake South finished second and Crystal Lake Central finished third. The first- and second-place teams qualify for the sectionals in March in Vernon Hills.
In total, 15 area high schools participated with more than 300 students competing for top scores in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics. The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by WYSE and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to the brightest students.
Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula and is written by teams of college and university faculty. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team, when their school fields a team; they have 40 minutes to complete multiple-choice tests that range in length from 30 questions in computer science) to 100 questions in English.
These individuals will advance to sectionals.
