Bonsai Show: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle. The Prairie State Bonsai Society presents its bonsai exhibition at The Morton Arboretum’s Destination Asia Festival. Prairie State Bonsai Society members come from all over the Chicago area and will be displaying trees that they have been developing over the years. The exhibition will include a section of trees in training, so that visitors can see bonsai trees in progress. Included with Arboretum admission. Garden Clubs of Illinois — State Flower Show: Noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Presented by the Garden Clubs of Illinois, this show features judged flower arrangements and exhibits, as well as a cut horticulture competition. The Garden Clubs of Illinois is composed of nearly 10,000 members from nine districts. For information, chicagobotanic.org.

Monday, Aug. 5

Naperville Community Gardeners — Preserving Safely: 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 5 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 1105 Catalpa Lane, Naperville. Caitlin Mellendorf, a registered dietitian and wellness educator with Illinois Extension, will cover multiple kinds of food preservation, including canning (including updates in the canning process), freezing, dehydration and fermentation. Bring your canner pressure gauges for a free test from the Illinois Extension office. Gauges should be tested yearly. Spotlight Garden Tour — Dwarf Conifer and Waterfall Gardens: 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Join horticulturists for a behind-the-scenes tour of the garden areas they oversee. Explore plant varieties and combinations, design elements, garden features and fun stories as you soak up a wealth of knowledge from their years of experience working in these gardens. Discuss selecting the right varieties for fall and early spring planting, how to use protective structures for your garden to extend your harvest window, cover crops and winter soil health, and more. Native Plant Identification: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 10, at The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle. Enrich your understanding of Illinois’ local natural areas by learning to identify common native plants. In this class, you will learn what to look for when identifying a plant, and then spend time walking the grounds of the arboretum with an expert, learning the names and identifying characteristics of common native plants of northern Illinois. Seed to Harvest — DeKalb County Community Gardens: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at DeKalb County Community Gardens, 2475 Bethany Road, Sycamore. DeKalb County Community Gardens needs your help in the garden with watering plants, seeding and planting veggies, harvesting and weeding. Exercise your green thumb by helping your community. The garden is a 1.5-acre growing space managed by DeKalb County Community Gardens. Program is open to all ages. No registration is required.
