One person died after a kayak tipped over on Silver Lake near Cary early Sunday, Oakwood Hills Police Chief Raymond Cordell confirmed.

According to the Cary Fire Protection District, two men took a canoe out and it tipped over about halfway across the lake.

First responders from the district arrived at 1 a.m. to the 100 block of Lakeshore Drive in Oakwood Hills and found a 20-year-old Schaumburg man who had swum to shore before their arrival. The man was evaluated at the scene but declined going to the hospital, according to the first district.

A 19-year-old man was unaccounted for, and divers set up a water rescue operation at North Beach and began searching the lake. At 2:30 a.m. the rescue became a recovery effort, and crews found the man about an hour later at a spot 12 feet deep and 60 feet from shore, officials said.
