Arlington Heights Garden Club — Birding: 7 p.m. Monday, April 22, at Saint Simon’s Episcopal Church, 717 W. Kirchoff Road, Arlington Heights. “Birding in Barrington and Beyond!” presented by Luke Dahlburg and Terri Passolt. Join local ‘birder’ Dahlburg while he explores the many beautiful birds that live in and around the Barrington area. Barrington is rich in natural woodland areas and privately protected sites, which host a variety of bird species. We also have Crabtree Nature, River Trails and Busse Woods Forest Preserve to provide us with an environment to enjoy birding. Sierra Club’s River Prairie Group — Native Plants: 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Glen Ellyn Historical Society, 800 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn. Make your garden come alive with native plants. Learn how you can use native plants in your home garden. Prairie Wind Native Plant Nursery will show you the many plants you can put in your garden that will make it stand out. and there will be pictures of gardens and suggestions from many people who have grown and used natives plants in their landscaping. Westmont Public Library Gardening Expo: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at Westmont Public Library, 428 N. Cass Ave., Westmont. This event will promote the library’s newly expanded gardening space maintained by local Master Gardeners, the Westmont Gardening Club, as well as a number of local gardening related organizations. Arbor Day Tree Dedication & Sapling Giveaway: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at Arboretum Garden at the Montgomery Police Department Campus, 11 Civic Center Ave., Montgomery. Each year the village dedicates a new native Illinois tree species to the Arboretum Garden area in front of the police department near the silo along Route 30. Sag Moraine Native Plant Community Native Plant Sale: Orders taken through May 1. Place your order now for native plant packages with a variety of design options. Plants are in one-pint containers and provided by Midwest Groundcovers as part of the Natural Garden Natives line, a selection of pesticide-free, local ecotype native plants. Orders can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Parking Lot D3, Palos Hills. Thousands of individual native plants will also be for sale on June 1 from Stellar Natives, along with advice on landscaping with native plants. For information, sagmoraine.org.
Citizens for Conservation’s Native Plant, Shrub and Tree Sale: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4-5 at CFC’s Hill ’N Dale Preserve, Barrington Hills. Each year, CFC hosts one of the largest native plant, tree and shrub sales in the region, featuring more than 200 species of native forbs, grasses, trees, and shrubs. All plants are acquired from high-quality area nurseries and are grown without the use of neonicotinoid pesticides, which are toxic to pollinators. Online order pickup will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 3 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Horticulture Spring Plant Sale: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 9; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 10; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the COD Greenhouse, just west of the Technical Education Center, on the College of DuPage’s main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The Horticulture program at College of DuPage will be hosting a Spring Plant Sale. Shoppers will be able to choose from a variety of uncommon annuals and perennials as well as fresh herbs and vegetables. Lombard’s Lilac Sale: Noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 10; 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 11 or until sold out, at Lilacia Park, 50 S. Park Ave., Lombard. All sales will be in person and you may choose from 16 different lilacs of varying sizes. Colors of the blooms range from deep violet, magenta and lilac to pink, blue and white. Proceeds support the Lombard Garden Club’s scholarship program, community beautification projects and educational outreach about the environment and gardening in our region. Bloomingdale Garden Club Flower and Plant Sale: Noon to 6 p.m. Friday, May 10; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until sold out, Saturday, May 11, at the Bloomingdale Park District Maintenance Building, 259 Springfield Drive, (on the north end of Springfield Park, ¼ mile south of Route 20/Lake Street), in Bloomingdale. St. Hugh of Lincoln Plant, Patio, and Craft Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church, on the southeast corner of Randall Road and Highland Avenue, in Elgin. Kane DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District Native Trees, Shrubs and Plant Sale: The order deadline for plants is May 17; order deadline for trees and shrubs has past. Ordering is open for plant only. The digital catalog is available on the organization’s website, it can be printed if you choose. Download the order form, complete your selections and follow the instructions to submit the order and payment. Des Plaines Garden Club’s Annual Plant and Garden Flea Market: 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at Frisbie Senior Center, 52 E. Northwest Highway, Des Plaines. University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners’ Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the University of Illinois Extension grounds, 100 S. Highway 45, Grayslake. University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners will hold its annual plant sale featuring a beautiful selection of nursery grown varieties not readily available at traditional garden centers — natives, new cultivars of perennials, grasses and pollinator-friendly plants. Many varieties of homegrown tomatoes, along with other vegetables and herbs, will be available. In addition, shop the “Garden Treasures” for new and gently used items to enhance your landscape. Hoffman Estates Community Garden Plots: Hoffman Estates residents may rent plots in the community gardens for $25. There are two garden plot locations in the village: North at Mumford and Westbury drives, or south at Volid Drive and Vista Lane. Plot assignments will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a garden plot, call Public Works at (847) 490-6800 or email publicworks@vohe.org. When requesting a plot, be sure to include your name, address, phone number, email address and garden location (north or south). Residents will be able to reserve only one plot each.
