Illinois Jaycees to host 'Today We are One 5K Stronger' Virtual 5K
Amid social distancing, the Illinois Jaycees are hosting their inaugural "Today We are One 5K Stronger" Virtual 5K. Being virtual, you can participate anywhere within the dates of Saturday, May 16 to Friday, July 10. Participants can run, walk, bike, inline skate, or roll in a wheelchair.
The Virtual 5K is open to anyone including Jaycees, families and community members. As part of the 5K, the Illinois Jaycees will be providing a training program with health and fitness exercises for participants at all levels of fitness.
"Good health is the foundation of a successful community," said Ryan Lew, health and fitness project chair.
Megan O'Brien, project chair added, "This Virtual 5K is a fun way for the entire family and our communities to stay active and healthy. Additionally, the proceeds raised will go back to a variety of organizations, like St. John's Hospital and United Way."
General registration will run from May 31 until July 10 for $35. Visit runsignup.com/Race/IL/Springfield/2020IllinoisJayceesVirtual5K orwww.iljaycees.org for more information and to register.
All participants will receive a T-shirt, race bib, goody bag, finish line streamer and medal for registering.
"I started running a few years ago because fellow Jaycees were sharing their passion for running with me. Today, running brings me joy and I want others to experience that same feeling, so I hope you can come out and join our 5K!," said Pat DeMarco, Illinois Jaycees 89th president.
As cities across the state all face different challenges, the Illinois Jaycees are raising funds for St. John's Hospital in Springfield, United Way, and participating Illinois chapters.
"Part of the Illinois Jaycees statewide initiative in 2020 is helping children's hospitals and this 5K will directly support that initiative," says Dawn Stangle, membership vice president of the Illinois Jaycees.
The Illinois Jaycees has 50 chapters throughout Illinois. The Jaycees give individuals ages 18 to 40 the opportunities to develop personal and leadership skills while serving their communities. The Illinois Chapter has been recognized locally and internationally for its efforts.
